The Cost of Living
In 2017, the cost of living index released by the Council for Community and Economic Research showed that the cost of living in Charleston is 4% higher than the national average. However, there are other financial benefits of moving to South Carolina. For instance, property taxes rank among the lowest in America.
In 2018, the average property tax rate in South Carolina was only 0.57%, the fifth lowest rate in the country. In addition, Charleston County’s current property tax rate for primary residences is .51%, the 11th lowest rate in the state.
Important Information on Tax Breaks
Charleston County assesses several types of exemptions from property taxes in South Carolina. Among them are:
- The Legal Residence Exemption: Those who can prove that their only legal residence is in Charleston County are eligible for this exemption.
- The Homestead Exemption: This exemption provides relief for people who are 65 or over, disabled, or legally blind.
- The Military Exemption: Those who are serving and on active duty are eligible for this exemption.
