Flip over a business card for The Beached Dog and you’ll see the quote by Turkish novelist, Orhan Pamuk that reads, “Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.” Owners Heather and Neil Heath are certainly the embodiment of this phrase, having recently celebrated their 5th year in business servicing pet owners of Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.
Heather and Neil moved to Seabrook Island in 2009 and the first thing they noticed was an abundance of dogs on the islands and no grooming salon in the area. Heather was busy studying business and entrepreneurship at The College of Charleston while Neil had been hard at work grooming for about four years in Mount Pleasant and then James Island. Their intention was to eventually open their own grooming salon, but they had no idea they’d dive in and open one so quickly. According to Heather, “the need and opportunity was there so we jumped in with both feet and we’ve been going strong ever since.”
The main goal at The Beached Dog is to provide the best grooming experience possible for their clients and their dogs. Rather than focusing on the quantity of dogs groomed each day, their main focus is on the quality of their service. More specifically, they offer “start to finish” grooming appointments very similar to a regular hairstylist. “There are so many benefits to offering this type of service. The most important being that our salon stays relatively calm and quiet because we have only 2-4 dogs in our shop at a time. This greatly helps reduce the stress and anxiety some dogs feel when visiting the groomer. And our clients LOVE the fact that their dog(s) only have to stay with us for 1-2 hours instead of having to spend the entire day,” says Heather.
You can book your grooming session at The Beached Dog by appointment only. Their typical hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 3pm, but keep in mind they do close 1-2 hours early during the winter season (January – March). From April through August (and from Thanksgiving to Christmas) bookings should be made at least one week in advance. In the off season, booking should be made 2-3 days in advance.
As a fun way to end the week and to show appreciation for their clients and community, Neil and Heather bake a large batch of delicious cookies every Friday morning to share with whoever would like to stop in and say hello. They also offer fresh baked homemade dog treats for your furry friend. They currently offer peanut butter drizzles and sweet potato chips. Stop in this April for their mason jar (32 oz) of peanut butter drizzles marked down to $10!
