Where are the Best Places to Ride Bikes on Kiawah Island?

There are 30 miles of paved bike trails to discover on Kiawah, along with 10 miles of flat, hard-packed beach. Many guests love the spontaneity of hitting the trails without a plan. However, if you’d prefer to head out with a route in mind, then we have you covered. Here is just a glimpse of what Kiawah Island offers!

  • Night Heron Park & the Kiawah Island Nature Center

If it’s your first time visiting Kiawah, then a trip to Night Heron Park needs to be at the top of your list! This maritime park encompasses 21 acres of beautiful land, and the biking paths here are the best way to see it all.

Before your ride, we recommend stopping by the park’s learning center, the Nature Center.

Here, their wonderful staff offers visitors an informative introduction to the area’s wildlife, flora, and fauna.

It is an excellent way to add a little bit of learning to your adventure!

Courtesy FYI: Ongoing construction in this area through 2023.

Tip for your trip: Night Heron Park is in the East Beach Village area. If you’d like proximity to the park, choose one of our East Beach Village properties, like our Windswept Villas or Turtle Point Villas.

  • Kiawah Island Observation Towers

There are hidden observation towers scattered throughout the island, only accessible via the bike path. Marshview tower is located in West Beach at the end of Marsh Hawk lane. It overlooks Cougar Point Golf Course and the surrounding marshlands.

Just past the 2nd gate off Governor’s Drive you’ll find the Marsh Island Park trail leading to a viewing tower.

Meander through the marsh over wooden bridges and paved pathways to experience nature undisturbed.

See expansive island wide views from the tower.

The Blue Heron Lookout Tower is located in The Preserve, in Vanderhorst Plantation. You’ll have killer views of Cinder Creek and Blue Heron Pond, surrounding rivers and tidal creeks and a great view of Kiawah from the back of the island to the shoreline. This is a great spot for bird watching!

  • Rhett's Bluff

Ride the Kiawah Island Parkway all the way through the Vanderhorst gate and you will hit the scenic Rhett’s Bluff neighborhood.

Kiawah Island Bike Trails in Rhetts Bluff

You’ll find quaint, shaded streets draped in Spanish Moss, centuries old live oak trees and a great view of Bass Pond.

Property owners can access the Rhett’s Bluff boat landing for a quick rest and sweeping views of the Kiawah River.

  • Freshfields Village

During your vacation, you will love the convenience of Freshfields Village. This one-of-a-kind shopping center is only a short bike ride (or car ride) away. Please keep in mind that this ride is more suitable for adults.

The Kiawah Island Parkway takes you from Kiawah to Freshfields Village, and there is a bike path along the way.

Once you arrive, grab a bite to eat at Cantina 76 or sit back and relax with an ice cream float from Vincent’s!

Read about Freshfields Village for information on the stores, restaurants, and ongoing events.

  • The Beach

No list of bike routes is complete without Beachwalker Park! This park is Kiawah Island’s only public beach access. There are over 10 miles of open shoreline to explore on your bike. Check out the tide chart before you head out though!

Biking on Kiawah Island beach

Head to the very front of the island, where the river meets the ocean and you may be in for a spectacular treat!

Groups of dolphins chase fish and strand feed at Captain Sam's Inlet. Please remember to view at a distance as not to interrupt this endangered natural occurrence.

  • For the best experience, we recommend biking after high tide. During this time, the hard-packed beach makes for the smoothest ride.
  • Check the tide chart for more information on planning your trip.
  • Learn about Charleston’s resident dolphins here.

Tip for your trip: Beachwalker Park is in the West Beach Village area of Kiawah. If you’d like proximity to this park, choose one of our West Beach Village homes.

  • Virtually Kiawah!

We’re so excited to introduce the Naturally Kiawah Pathways tours by the Kiawah Conservancy. There are 8 different tours through the TravelStoreys App offering a wealth of information about lowcountry habitats, wildlife and the History of Kiawah Island.

You can even do a beach scavenger hunt (so fun for the kiddos) or take a self guided GPS activated walking and paddling tours! Visit the Kiawah Conservancy's website for routes and access to the app.
