Can't Miss Charleston Events in August
Come celebrate this lowcountry art form of Gullah culture at the annual Sweetgrass Festival on August 1, 2020 from 10 am to 3 pm at Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park. Basket making in America first appeared in Mt. Pleasant in the 17th century. Slaves brought their exceptional skills from Sierra Leone to forge utilitarian vessels made from bulrush. Materials and uses evolved over time into decorative, sought after works of art fashioned from sweetgrass. Come out and meet local artisans who will be showcasing their skills and offering demonstrations and pieces for sale.
Locals love their seafood! The 2nd annual Seafood Festival of Charleston takes place August 9th, 2020 at the Omar Shrine Temple from 12 - 4 pm. It features delicious lowcountry favorites such as fried shrimp, shrimp and grits, crab boil and so much more! The seafood competition offers attendees the opportunity to vote for "crowd favorite". Vendors will also be on hand for the day of festivities.
The Charleston Farmers Market is Saturday tradition in downtown Charleston. Located in Marion Square at the corner of King Street and Calhoun Street vendors offer everything from original artwork and jewelry, to handmade soaps, fresh produce, artisan cheeses and so much more. The Charleston Farmers market runs every Saturday from 8 am til 2 pm from April thru November. Friends and family look forward to the live music, food concessions, and perusing over 100 local vendor stalls. Save room for a Nutella crepe!
King Street in downtown Charleston, SC is recognized by the U.S. News & World Report’s as one of the 10 Best Shopping Streets in the U.S. Every 2nd Sunday of the month King Street becomes a pedestrian only walkway with outside dining, street musicians, and area retailers opening their doors creating a one of a kind festive afternoon. The street is blocked off from 1 to 5 pm. So bring the family dog, or just come and meet up with your friends for the social event known as Second Sunday. You never know who you might see!

Weekly Summer Events
Freshfields Update: We’re working hard to ensure our property remains as safe as possible for visitors and staff. At this time, we have paused our summer event series. August events will be posted here if they become available.
Every Monday in the Summer from 4 pm til 8 pm stop by Freshfields Village for the Monday Farmers Market. Local food artisans offer delicious handmade pastas and sauces; fresh baked goods, local cheeses, farmers featuring local certified organic produce, fresh local seafood, and packaged and prepared foods including jams, jellies, pecans, olive oils, sweets, and more. Food vendors are also on hand. Don't miss the ribs and fresh pork rinds!
Music on the Green is a summer tradition for residents and vacationers alike. Friday nights from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Freshfields Village. This weekly event runs from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day weekend. This free concert event features a different band each week. Shag the night away to your favorite beach music and other favorites. Bring a chair or a blanket and grab some take out from the Harris Teeter store for an evening of music fun.
Kick it at Bohicket
From Memorial Day until Labor Day come on out to Bohicket Marina every Tuesday night, 6:30 - 9 pm. Take in the beautiful views of Bohicket Marina along with live music and great fun for the kiddos! From one end of the marina to the other there are fun activities for the kids to enjoy and work out that last little bit of energy for the day! Included: Free entry, face painting, balloon artist, photo booth, sand art bracelets & corn hole!
Freshfields Village every Wednesday night from June thru August. Bring the family and enjoy movie night outdoors on the Village Green. Spread out your blanket and bring the buttered popcorn. The family fun starts at 8:30 pm. Check back to view Summer 2020 line-up!
Todd at the Ice Cream shop hosts summer Hermit Crab Races every Thursday night May through August at Bohicket Marina. Check in begins at 6:30 and races start at 7! Don't have your own hermit crab? Rent one for the race for only $2! For questions call Todd at 248-719-0076.
Polished chrome and vintage classics gather every 3rd Saturday at Freshfields Village around the Village Green. Cars and Coffee is a great opportunity to see some unique, antique and other cool styles of cars, and meet your neighbors. Swing by from 9 - 11 am on August 15th. Don’t forget to grab breakfast or a tasty latte from JAVA JAVA!
