The History of the Ravenel Bridge
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is the second bridge to span the Cooper River and connect downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. Charleston natives probably remember the original, known as the Cooper River Bridge. As the Holy City welcomed more residents and visitors, the need for a larger overpass became obvious. In the early 2000s, construction started on the now-iconic Ravenel Bridge.
Where to Find Parking
For the easiest parking, we suggest you head to Waterfront Park in Mount Pleasant, near the Visitor Center. From there, you’ll be able to find the pedestrian path easily. There’s one lane for bikers and another for walkers. It’s important for walkers to leave enough rooms for the cyclists to pass by.
How Long Is the Ravenel Bridge?
The Ravenel Bridge walking path is 2.5 miles long , making it a five-mile round trip. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to trek across the whole thing. Many visitors stop at the halfway point of the bridge, about 1.2 miles up, and turn back. Either way, you’ll enjoy a scenic route over Charleston Harbor.

If you’ve never participated in the Cooper River Bridge Run, this 10K race is a great way to experience the Ravenel Bridge. Every year on the first weekend in April, thousands of walkers and runners from across the country arrive in Charleston for this exciting event. It’s the third-largest 10k in the United States and is not to be missed.
