Your Complete Guide to Night Heron Park

Take a deep breath and fill your lungs with fresh ocean air! The smell of sweet Carolina jasmine floats in the wind, and Spanish moss drapes from the ancient oak trees. These are a few things that we love about Night Heron Park.

Kiawah Island Nature Center

Remember to visit the Kiawah Island Nature Center to make the most of your trip.

You’ll find the Nature Center within the park, and it is the best place to learn more about Kiawah Island’s wildlife, flora, and fauna before you explore the 21-acre park.

Inside the building, interactive displays provide a fun, hands-on learning experience for children and adults alike!  The Nature center will double in size in 2022!

Wildlife

There are so many animals that make Kiawah Island their home. During your visit, keep your eyes open for maritime birds like the great blue heron and the snow-shoe egret! You can spot these beautiful birds on the island all year round.

Fiddler Crab Night Heron Park

During the warmer months, you can look forward to hundreds of quarter-size fiddler crabs sunbathing on the walking and biking trails.

Fiddler crabs are easily distinguished by the oversized claw of the male. As you approach them, they will scurry away. It is always a special treat to see!

Walking Paths & Bike Trails

With plenty of shade from the ancient oak trees, the trails at Night Heron Park are the perfect place to get your daily dose of exercise!

Nature Trail Night Heron Park

You’ll find more than 30 miles of biking and walking paths to explore throughout Kiawah Island. Bike rentals are available at the park, or you may bring your own bike.

Don't forget to check out the Naturally Kiawah Demonstration Garden as you stroll through the park. Relax, unwind and get some native plant inspo!

Night Heron Park Events

Take your visit to the next level by taking advantage of the park’s nature tours and programs. You can make reservations for various activities, including alligator tours, bird-watching walks, and butterfly tours. After your excursion, conclude your trip at the Island Outpost, where you’ll find Kiawah Island T-shirts, gifts, and souvenirs.

Kamp Kiawah is another exciting program offered at Night Heron Park. Energetic camp counselors from across the country direct this adventure camp for children ages three to 15, where little ones can enjoy arts and crafts, outdoor games, trips to the beach, time by the pool, and more. Full-day and half-day programs are available.
