Medical University of South Carolina

The Medical University of South Carolina, known as MUSC, was founded in 1824. MUSC Health is the only academic health science center in the state of South Carolina. It is the largest non-federal employer in Charleston. The university hospital operates a 700-bed medical center in the heart of downtown Charleston.

The downtown location encompasses several city blocks and offers comprehensive medical care to residents and visitors in Charleston. MUSC Health facilities include the NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center and the only Level 1 trauma center in the Lowcountry. In February 2022 the Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital at MUSC opened. It is a nationally recognized women's and children's health center.

Named for tech philanthropist Shawn Jenkins, it features state-of-the-art care facilities, a pediatric cardiac care center, and a helipad for critical care patients.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare System in Charleston,SC

Built in 1850, Roper Hospital is the first community hospital in the Carolinas. Colonel Thomas Roper envisioned a hospital that would treat all residents. His bequest initiated a long legacy of philanthropic spirit that continues to be inherent in the mission of Roper Hospital. In 1998 Bon Secours St. Francis hospital and Charleston Roper merged to form the Roper St. Francis hospital Healthcare System.
