Sweetgrass Festival – Charleston

Come celebrate this Lowcountry art form of Gullah culture at the annual Sweetgrass Festival on July 22, 2023, from 10 am to 3 pm at Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park.

Basket making in America first appeared in Mt. Pleasant in the 17th century. Slaves brought their exceptional skills from Sierra Leone to forge utilitarian vessels made from bulrush. Materials and uses evolved over time into decorative, sought after works of art fashioned from sweetgrass.

Come out and meet local artisans who will be showcasing their skills and offering demonstrations and pieces for sale!
