April is full of so many exciting events around the Lowcountry for the whole family to enjoy. We can’t wait to relax and take in the music at Freshfields Village Blues by the Sea concert, catch the Charleston RiverDogs home opener, and cruise around the Charleston Harbor on the Sunday Jazz Brunch Riverboat Cruise. Kiawah and Seabrook Happenings
Blues by the Sea – Head over to Freshfields Village on Sunday, April 10th for the 12th Annual Blues by the Seaevent. The free, outdoor concert will take place on the Village Green from 2:30pm – 7:00pm and feature a variety of blues acts including Randy McAllister, Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues, and Mississippi Heat. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the event as well.
Kiawah Island House and Art Tour – Whether you’re thinking of purchasing a home on Kiawah Island, or are simply interested in the grand architecture and elegant detailing that these classic homes have to offer, you will have the chance to view 5 of these spectacular properties on Friday, April 8th from 1:00pm – 5:00pm. Tickets are $55 per person and this years’ proceeds will go towards the Art to Go program from the Gibbes Museum of Art and the Engaging Creative minds program on Johns Island. Bohicket Marina Dolphin Slam – Bohicket Marina will be hosting its 3rd Annual Dolphin Slam on Saturday, April 30th from 7:00am – 3:00pm. There will be free dockage for all boats participating in the competition and there is a $200 entry fee per boat. 1st place winner receives $2,400, 2nd place $800, and 3rd place $400. There will be a reception from 3:00pm – 8:00pm at Bohicket Marina with prizes being awarded at 7:00pm.
Food and Wine
Sunday Jazz Brunch Riverboat Cruise – Enjoy live jazz music while cruising around the Charleston Harbor from 11:30am – 1:30pm aboard the Carolina Queen on Sunday, April 24th. The Jazz Brunch Riverboat Cruise will feature music by the TenCap Jazz Combo as well as a buffet brunch. Tickets are only $46.95 per person and also include either one free Bloody Mary or Mimosa.
Blessing of the Fleet Seafood Festival – Support the Lowcountry’s local fishing and shrimping industry by attending the 29th Annual Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival on Sunday, April 24th at Memorial Waterfront Park in Mount Pleasant. The free event runs from 11:30am – 6:00pm and will feature a boat parade, craft vendors, live music, delicious food, and activities that the whole family can enjoy.
Lowcountry Cajun Festival – The James Island County Park will be bringing a taste of Louisiana to the Lowcountry on Sunday, April 3rd from 12:00pm – 6:00pm. Admission to the Lowcountry Cajun Festival is $15 per person (children ages 12 and under are free) for all day, unlimited access to Cajun and Creole fare, live music, crawfish eating contest, and carnival rides and games for the kids.
Charleston RiverDogs – Head out to “The Joe” to catch the Charleston RiverDog’s first home game of the season against the Columbia Fireflies (formerly the Savannah Sand Gnats) on Thursday, April 7th at 7:05pm followed by post-game fireworks. Volvo Car Open – Each Spring, Daniel Island hosts the largest women’s only tennis tournament in the world that features the best players in the game. This year’s Volvo Car Open (formerly known as the Family Circle Cup) will be held from Saturday, April 2nd through Sunday, April 10th. Volvo Car Stadium will also host the 2016 PowerShares Series on Saturday, April 9th at 7:00pm. The one-night tournament will feature matches between tennis champions Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, James Blake, and Mardy Fish.
The Charleston Battery – MUSC Health Stadium (formerly Blackbaud Stadium) on Daniel Island is one of the premier professional soccer venues in the US. Head over to the stadium on Saturday, April 9th at 7:30pm to watch The Charleston Battery play the Wilmington Hammerheads. Tickets range from $10 to $20 and can be purchased here. MUSC Health Stadium will also be hosting the Southern Ground Music & Food Festival on April 16th and 17th. The two-day event will feature music by the Marshall Tucker Band, Kacey Musgraves, the Zac Brown Band, and many more!
Outdoors and Recreation
Cooper River Bridge Run – Whether you will be running, walking, or cheering from the sidelines, the 39th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run on Saturday, April 2nd will be a great time for all. The 10K race begins in Mt. Pleasant on Coleman Boulevard, crosses the beautiful Ravenel Bridge, and ends in downtown Charleston where there will be a Finish Festival at Marion Square. The annual Cooper River Bridge Kids Run & WonderFest will take place on Friday, April 1st at Hampton Park and is free to all those who wish to participate.
Mullet Haul Trail Run – On Saturday, April 23rd, Johns Island County Park will be holding the Mullet Haul 5K, 10K, and 10K relay run on the trails of Mullet Hall Equestrian Center. Just a short car ride away from Kiawah and Seabrook Island, this is a great way to get in your exercise on vacation. Stick around after the race for cold refreshments, delicious food, and live music.
Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science – Eclectic Food Network personality, Alton Brown, comes to the Gaillard Center on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:30pm for a presentation of Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science. The two-hour show will leave you fully entertained with some of Alton’s famous talk show antics, unique songs, and out-of-this-world food demonstrations.
Charlotte Ballet Presents: Little Mermaid – The classic tale of The Little Mermaid comes to life at the Gaillard Center when the Charlotte Ballet comes to town April 9th and 10th. The performance will feature original choreography and imaginative sets and costumes that the whole family will enjoy.
